Excellent addition for surface design
As an offbrand design tool for ceramics, it does the trick. I am pretty new to this, so I only did a few options of what this tool could do, and the clay that I was photographing was not leather hard.It will behave differently with firmer clay, but it is sharp, and I see that it can create some precise patterning.I had a bolt tightener nearby and once tightened into the angle I wanted, I had no problem with it moving. The star removal is because of the incorrect title. This will not cut a handle.

Nice carving tool for leather hard clay
I really, really like this tool for carving on leather hard clay! I finally used it today, in combination with a scratch art tool, to add a design to my bowl. It has a fine point which carves well. The advertised use isnāt really how I think it c as n be used myself. I donāt think it would make handles. Perhaps they have others that do?

Pottery Handle Tool Looks the Part, Falls Short in Use
In ceramics, as in the rest of life, there are mistakes to be made. I made a ceramics-related mistake once, a long time ago, and Iāll get to that in a minute. But first, the matter at hand, or more accurately, in-hand: the Therwen Pottery Handle Making Tool, the ordering of which constitutes my latest mistake.Itās a beautiful tool ā the visual quality of the red pear wood, the way the metal tip sits on the end of the handle just so ā it looks like it is more than ready to make some art, or at least some craft. (See photos.) But then, what do I know about working in the clay medium. The answer to that question, with proof still to come, is ālittle to nothing.āNevertheless taken by the toolās beauty, and thinking its utility would match, I ordered it. āWhat a fine addition to the household collection of clay tools this will be,ā I thought to myself. And that collection belongs to my wife, an up-and-coming star at the local ceramics studio, or at least I think so.Well, I presented the tool for her to take for a test drive. She came back from that journey with a mixed bag of pros and cons.Cons ā⢠To carve deep into clay, the movable cutting tip slips out of its set position, despite careful screw-tightening while holding the securing nut in place with small wrench.⢠Stated purpose, the making of cup handles, canāt be accomplished properly. Makes only thin and flimsy handles.Pros ā⢠Comfortable to hold⢠Works fine for etching lines, using a light touch (See photo)⢠Nice caseI keep thinking Iāll give the tool a test drive myself one day. But that mistake I promised to tell you about gives me pause.I was a 3rd grader in arts & crafts class. My concept of a proper clay project was the design and execution of an avant-garde tree sculpture. There was a slight production problem. I had somehow failed to expel all the air bubbles from my clay before working it.This careless approach to technique, as my teacher saw it, caused my tree masterpiece to explode during the firing in the kiln. She solemnly reported to the class that the blast had sent the other kidsā work in the kiln (ash trays all ā it was the ā50s) on a one-way trip to clay dust oblivion. So there it is, proof positive that calling on an expert is always the way to go when it comes to assessing a toolās utility if it is out of your wheelhouse.Bottom line: My wife will keep this in her clay tool kit, but only with an eye toward line etching work, not for handle making.

Not a handle tool, but excellent carving tool!
This is a fantastic tool for any ceramics artist that loves to carve. I used this on my leather hard wheel thrown pieces and it carved through like butter. The blade it sharp, and the design is precise. This design is essentially a more affordable version of the popular Diamond Core tools and the performance so far is comparable. The grip is comfortable, and really I have nothing negative to say about the design.I did remove one start for the advertising, this advertises as a handle pulling tool. This is much too small to pull a handle with adn I find the listing misleading in that sense.

A Potter’s New Best Friend: The Perfect Shaping Tool
I am absolutely thrilled with this shaping tool from Therwen Pottery. It has quickly become an indispensable part of my toolkit and has already made a huge difference in my work. This tool is incredibly versatile, helping to shape, carve, and sculpt with remarkable precision. I’ve used it on everything from mugs and cups to vases, and it performs flawlessly every time. The design is brilliant. It feels both steady and sturdy in my hand, and the little gripper ensures it remains comfortably fitted, just like a pencil. This allows for excellent control and makes it a joy to use for extended periods. The quality is great and comes with a neat case to keep it at the ready, and the value it adds to my process is immense. I believe all potters could benefit from having this in their kit. I highly recommend it for its fantastic performance and superior quality.

Not for mug handles. Way too small.
I got this knowing it was too small to make any kind of mug handle. I got it for carving clay. It still only gets three stars. Iāll still keep it in my kit, though. The single screw holding the metal to the wood is decently tight, but can slip while youāre working – very frustrating. The tight point on the v-shape is good⦠but long in the front-to-back dimension making curves a bit finicky to cut. I line with a wire cutting tool where you can just sort of ādrawā into the clay, you need to rotate the whole tool.

Not a “Pottery Handle Making Tool”
My wife says: To call this tool a “Pottery Handle Making Tool” is misleading if you are trying to make anything bigger than a child’s tea cup -hence the lost star. That being said it is a nice, well made tool. It is ‘as shown’ in the picture labeled “Product Detail”. (The other pictures seem to be composites with components shown in differing scale.) I expect this tool will prove itself very useful for carving designs on leather hard clay.

Terrific for pulling handles and some carving as well.
This tool feels nice in my hand and moves through clay easily and uniformly. It allows the pulling of consistent handles and is great for carving soft leather hard clay as well. I did not have my camera the first time I used but will upload some pics next time around.
